Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia was answering questions Wednesday, one day after his team surprised by trading leading receiver Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles for a draft pick.
But his news conference took an odd turn, when he snapped at a reporter for their posture while they were asking Patricia a question. …
Reporter: “Why do you think this move makes your franchise better?”
Patricia: “Ah, well, you know. Do me a favor just kinda sit up, just like, have a little respect for the process. Every day you come and ask me questions and you’re just kinda like you know, ‘gimme this.’ “
Reporter: “I’m sitting …”
Patricia: “I’m asking just to be a little respectful in this whole process.”
Reporter: “Okay, that’s fine.”
Patricia: “So ask me a question professionally and I’ll answer it for you.”
So let me get this straight. Matt Patricia, in association with GM Bob Quinn, trades away the Lions’ best offensive weapon outside of the QB basically calling it quits on this season. The reporter rightfully does his job in asking HOW THE F*CK trading away Golden Tate for a 2019 3rd round draft pick makes the team better in any way, shape or form. That’s where Patricia gets sensitive.
He’s sensitive because deep down in his heart he knows that it is a highly legitimate question. Instead of answering the question like a MAN he folds like a chair and goes on the attack. Sad, really. Patricia took a page out of the “Trump” playbook by instead of answering a question you don’t like, simply attack the person asking it.
Trading away Tate was a blow to the dumb Lions’ fans who were still holding out hope for a playoff run. It’s not like the team is in the dump with no chance. The Lions sit at 3-4 just two games out of first place in the NFC North and two games against the Vikings and Bears still to come. Why trade away the best offensive weapon before that stretch? It makes no sense unless the management is conceding the season. And the fans are once again given no answers. Classic Lions.
This doesn’t seem like something a Bill Belichick prodigy would do but here we are. It’s not exactly similar to the whole “We’re onto Cincinnati” shtick created by the silent assassin head coach of the New England Patriots.
“Be a little bit respectful in this process,” coming from the same dude who wears hoodies with ripped sleeves and a pencil in his ear that has never been used once during a game.
Patricia clearly has no pride in his own appearance so he probably should keep his mouth shut on the subject going forward. He looks like a middle school gym teacher who was just never given the opportunity to show what he could do on the high school football field. He looks like he’s always ready to complain that if only his coach would have put him in the game his team would have won the state championship three years in a row.
He’s obviously a sensitive little man who questions his decisions and pouts when facing some simple criticism. So I’ll end it here before he googles his own name and finds a random blogger speaking ill on him. The Lions don’t need any more Big J journalists taking up real estate in Patricia’s head.
But if you’re this reporter in this situation, what do you do? It’s too tough to act like nothing happened. You either have to straighten up and let Patricia own you OR you show up to the next press conference dressed exactly as Patricia dresses on game day with a pillow under your shirt for effect. Those are the only two viable options at this point in time.
