The Michigan state Senate approved legislation to install “baby boxes” in police and fire departments.
The hashtag “babybox” is a little excessive. I’m not sure who is clicking the search page and typing in “babybox” but there’s almost a 100% guarantee that those people are on some type of watchlist.
And I have some questions.
Is the box heated? Is there a night-light? Any serenading music for the precious baby to make them feel slightly more comfortable? How do police know who exactly surrendered the baby? So many questions I need answered I might need to go to Lansing myself.
At first glance I wasn’t sure if I agreed with a legal drop-and-go service for parents who can’t or don’t want to properly care for their newborns. But there’s many positives to this. It’s a far better option than abortion and better than growing up with parents who don’t want you.
However, it also makes it far easier to put a child into the foster-care and adoption system which historically does not have a great reputation. But being put into the system at that age gives the newborn the best chance at finding the best fit for them.
In the end, the baby finding a loving home to set them up for the most successful life possible is the ultimate goal. But again, I’m not sure if that’s the ultimate goal of people searching #babybox pictures on IG. Maybe a new name is in order. I’ll get back to you on that.
