JUST IN: Elon Musk donates $423K to Flint middle schoolers

FLINT, MI – A sizable donation by tech billionaire Elon Musk will provide Flint Community Schools with the funds to purchase laptops for all seventh and eighth-grade students in the district.

The $423,600 donation by the Elon Musk Foundation announced at Wednesday night’s school board meeting allows the district to buy Chromebooks for the middle school students as they move into the former Flint Northern High School as part of a secondary school restructuring plan. – MLive

This is an incredible gift and attempt to decrease the digital divide in a society that has made internet access and advanced computer knowledge is a must-have in nearly any workplace. Going into high school without internet know-how is like going camping in the forest without and fire-starting equipment. You might be able to figure it out once you get there but it’s going to take more effort and time than a person who was born with flint (see what I did there?) in their hands.

Perhaps the most important snippet is the fact that every one of these kids getting a free laptop will be able to take them home and use them at the end of the night. Being able to endlessly wander the internet in curiosity is one of the great gifts of the modern world and every kid in America should have that learning tool at their disposal. You really want these kids still looking at Playboys? C’mon now. We’re more evolved than that at this point.

It’s important to note that this donation comes from The Musk Foundation so it will likely be a nice tax write-off for the Tesla CEO. That doesn’t take away from the fact that the foundation is providing kids of Flint, MI (🚨WHO STILL DON’T HAVE CLEAN WATER IN MOST HOMES OR SCHOOL🚨) a much needed utility that they otherwise likely wouldn’t be able to afford.

This also comes on the heels of a $480K donation announced in October that is being used to pay for water filtration systems in 12 Flint schools and the administration building that is expected to be completed by February 2019. When you get a headline like, “Elon Musk’s No Good, Very Bad Year: A Tesla Timeline,” from The New York Times you know you’ve f*cked up big this year. Like when he suggested that a diver that helped rescue 12 trapped boys in a Thailand cave was a pedophile on Twitter. My personal favorite was that harmless moment when he puff-puff-passed on the Joe Rogan Podcast and sent Tesla’s stock price stumbling. You’ve got some image rebuilding to do after stunts like that and Flint is the best option. We’re just thankful somebody with some money and power is finally taking action in the atrocity that has been the now 5-year long Flint Water Crisis.
